Data and Privacy
The Alaska Music Census is an anonymous survey. That means we don’t collecting email addresses or personal details through the census that would make it easy to identify any individual taking the survey.
We’re also not looking at single records when we look at the data — we’re grouping them together. For example, we may ask you questions about your income or the income of your music business, but we will be adding that to a pool of ALL music sector income, not analyzing yours on its own.
Sometimes you may give us personal information when you are NOT taking the census — for example, if you email us, or sign up for our email list to get notified about the results (then we’ll be storing your email address). But we won’t use your information to contact you unless you give us permission to, and if you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it, we will.
The Alaska Music Census is a project of the Northern Culture Exchange (NCE) and AKIMI (Alaska Independent Musicians Initiative). NCE is a 501(c)(3c) non-profit, and the legal entity ultimately responsible for our data and privacy policies.
Email newsletter subscriptions and contact lists exist for many different NCE programs or projects (such as AKIMI, Parlor in the Round, Spenard Jazz Fest, All Ages Music Co-Op, or others). You should know that if you unsubscribe from the Alaska Music Census email newsletter, you may still be subscribed to other email newsletters from other NCE programs (if you signed up for them), and you may still receive correspondence from them that mentions the Alaska Music Census.
Here’s a rundown of the information we’re collecting:
User information: if you voluntarily give it to us while signing up for our Mailchimp email newsletter, we may collect your name, email address, phone number, and other personal information you choose to provide. Mailchimp securely stores that data, and their privacy policy is available at their website.
Through our music census survey tool (powered by Formsite), we may collect the answers to anonymous survey questions if you voluntarily provide that information. Formsite securely stores that data, and their privacy policy is available at their website.
Website activity information: we or web tools we use (such as Formsite or Mailchimp) may automatically collect application logs, data files, information collected by cookies, IP address, browser information, and metrics generated in the normal operation of a website. “Application logs” are text files in which are recorded most of the activities on a website, including page visits and usage. Website activity information is sometimes associated with an IP address, but not with Personal Data. Third parties may also collect information about your website activity over time, if you visit the site after visiting other websites or using mobile applications that track your web activity.
Emails and messages: if you email us or contact us through a contact form, we may store your messages and our replies to them, including any attached files.
Here’s what we’re using that collected Personal Data for:
To allow you to interface with our website and complete our anonymous survey
To communicate with you about topics and through channels for which you have given us your affirmative consent
To complete data analyses and data aggregation, which may include sharing anonymized data with third party data analysis partners under contract (such as research institutions)
To operate, evaluate and improve our organization, including developing new products and services; managing our communications; determining the effectiveness of, and optimizing the content you see; analyzing our products, services, website, mobile application, and any other digital assets; facilitating the functionality of our website, mobile application, and any other digital assets
To comply with any legal obligations
Here’s what we’re not using that collected Personal Data for:
To sell to third parties
To publish in any form except where totally anonymized and aggregated
We store Personal Data only for as long as it is necessary for the fulfillment of the purpose for which it was collected, unless otherwise required or authorized by applicable law.
If you want your Personal Data removed, you can unsubscribe from our Mailchimp email list or contact us directly.
